Minecraft brewing guide

This brewing guide covers all 15 potions in Minecraft Java Edition. The most commonly used are the Fire Resistance Potion (Magma Cream), Night Vision Potion (Golden Carrot), Healing Potion (Glistering Melon Slice), Strength Potion (Blaze Powder), Invisibility Potion (Fermented Spider Eye on Night Vision), Swiftness Potion (Sugar), and Slowness Potion (Fermented Spider Eye on Swiftness or Leaping). Most recipes haven't changed since 1.9, so this guide applies to 1.18, 1.19, 1.20, and 1.21.

Four potions are corrupted variants made by adding Fermented Spider Eye to an existing potion rather than to an Awkward Potion: Invisibility (from Night Vision), Slowness (from Swiftness or Leaping), Harming (from Healing or Poison), and Weakness (from a Water Bottle directly, no Nether Wart needed).

Every potion can be converted to a Splash Potion with Gunpowder, then to a Lingering Potion using Dragon's Breath on the splash variant. The Dragon's Breath is collected by hitting a bottle in the Ender Dragon's breath attack. Lingering potions leave a cloud that applies the effect to anyone standing in it.

Redstone and Glowstone are mutually exclusive. Redstone extends duration, Glowstone increases the level. The exception is Slowness, where Glowstone upgrades to level IV rather than the usual II.

Looking for enchantments too? Potions and enchantments are commonly used together for combat and exploration. An enchantments guide is coming soon.

All recipes are for Minecraft Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses the same brewing recipes with minor differences in some durations.
