About Minecraft colors

Minecraft has two separate color systems. Formatting codes (§0–§f) control text color in chat, on signs, in books, and in item names. The 16 dye colors are the block palette used for wool, concrete, terracotta, stained glass, and banners.

To enter a § code on Java Edition, hold Alt and press 0167 on the numpad (Windows), or copy and paste it. In plugin environments like Essentials or Paper, use & instead — so &7 gives gray text, &a gives green, &e gives yellow.

Colored signs: Since 1.20, you can right-click a sign with a dye to change the background color. To color sign text, use formatting codes when typing.

The dye color list covers all 16 colors in Minecraft: white, orange, magenta, light blue, yellow, lime, pink, gray, light gray, cyan, purple, blue, brown, green, red, and black. These are the colors available for wool, concrete, and all other dyeable blocks.
